At Good Eat’n, every meal tells a family story. The name comes from what Joe McDole’s mother and grandmother would say after a plate they loved: “That’s some good eat’n.”
Joe’s parents ran McDole’s Takeout Soul Food in Spring Valley in the 1970s and closed it when he was a little boy. His mother never stopped wishing they still had a restaurant, and Joe promised her that one day he’d open one.
He learned to cook at family reunions in Alabama, where his grandmother and great-grandmother taught the kids to cook, fish and live off the land. In 2024 Joe took over the old Eddy’s space on Broadway, rebuilt it, and opened Good Eat’n with his daughter Mercedes running the restaurant day to day.
It’s still a family kitchen, and every guest leaves the way the McDoles have always sent people off: have a blessed day.
